Week 8 - Response to Content

What is communication? Do whales communicate? Do birds? Do atoms? Does DNA communicate? What would you suggest as the limits to communication? When does a failure of human communication occur?

I have decided to focus my essay topic on part of the above questions. After researching a little, I found a perfect article. This is the link to it:

The article is called, 'Can Animals Talk' by R.J. Irwin. I hope to give a general idea of communication, and then speak how animals communicate too!

My thesis will be something like...'Humans aren't the only beings to communicate with each other; animals also communicate with sounds and actions.'

Week 7 - Response to Content

Kostakis (2010) writes in his article on, 'Identifying and understanding the problems of Wikipedia's peer governance: The case of inclusionists versus deletionists'. He writes that 'Wikipedia is about representations of knowledge, about unfinished artifacts in a constant process of creation and evaluation. It does not rely on hierarchical structures, but on the wisdom of the crowds for its quality control processes.' So Wikipedia is basically just an online encyclopedia where anyone, doesn't matter who they are, can write on the related page, edit and remove text that was there already. That is why some are so dubious, as although it's generally pretty accurate, there is the odd post where some 'idiot' has gone and written false information on there.

University lecturers and high school teachers have warned us and told us NOT to use Wikipedia as a source, but now there are some who say use it? Including this class' lecturer?! It's confusing to be told one thing then another. I understand that it's a great idea to steal the proper references that people have put on Wikipedia, but we're allowed to reference the actual articles now. Hmmmm. haha

Kostakis refers to Bauwens (2008) article, 'Is something fundamentally wrong with Wikipedia governance processes?' often. I looked into Bauwen's arguement, and it is just riddled with quotes from yet others. Both articles are very clear in stating that Wikipedia should be a source to reference if you so wish.
:)

I'm going to put the references for this one in some comments... The picture below describes what happens when I try and put the links in there. Also I had to rewrite this WHOLE post again, since it wiped it all for me :(

Week 9 - Response to Content

Upon reading Stockwell and Muir's (2003) beliefs that the American war over in the middle east is/was heavily fictionly narrated to the general public. They claimed with 'so called evidence' that the military consorted with Hollywood officials on many occasion to aide their attempts to publicise disasterous news to American citizens and in turn the world. This may have happened, and I suppose if there is substantial enough evidence, I should believe it. Yet even if they did...I find no crime in this. Yes, Hollywood is known to over-dramatize things to the point that the truth is now fictionarily twisted, but they are the experts. In cases like the September 11 tragedy, which Stockwell and Muir (2003) do mention, I have absolutely no qualms with it. Such a tragedy was a major blow to the country, and I think that the major influencers of the country were officially gathering together to get their facts straight, as the news was worldwide. I suppose I'm arguing a point that doesn't necessarily need arguing, but I feel the need to fight back.

Stockwell and Muir (2003) claimed that video game combat was becoming an increasing worry, in that soldiers were encouraged to practice on such machinery to prepare themselves mentally for real life battle, and I couldn't help but think, 'is this a bad thing?' If the technology has assisted those who are about to go into combat to mentally prepare themselves and focus whilst incorporating a little fun, then why not?

I suppose my real problem with the article, with all respect to the authors as they have their degrees and know a WHOLE lot more than me, is that their anti-war tendencies and anti-authoritarian (seemingly to me anyway) outlook really reeks throughout their article. Yes, they are incredibly entitled to do that, since of course it is their piece and they can do whatever they want with it, but I was so turned off by their strong opinions as I was reading it. It may just be the way I balk when a one-sided arguement is presented to me, that I feel the need to argue the other point. ahaha But these are just the issues that I felt whilst reading that article. I did not wish to offend my lecturer however, so don't take it too personally. haha
:)

Week 7 - Tutorial Task

Wellll... I happened to be sick on the day in the tutorial class where they picked groups, so I'm happy my friend Tara Morgan teamed up with Ibolya Monai and included me :) They also started to discuss and formulate a plan for the video assignment that's coming up. They decided on making a film that brings awareness to the general public that big brand companies hide things in their Terms of Service. Google, one of the current dominating organisations, is named Gaggle in our video :D We had soooo much difficulty finding pictures from Creative Commons that were relevant...

None of us had a good camera, so we decided to go with still images with motivating images instead. I'm planning on using the prograam 'Final Cut Pro', as I know ALL about how to use the program. I took year
11 and 12 Film and Television...

Week 8 - Tutorial Task

The above video is the completed video needed for class. Ibolya, Tara and myself edited this film using iMovie. Whilst doing this, I believe I as well as the other girls really learnt a bit more about New Communication Technology, well at least the technology aspect, as none of us had any experience with the program. We encountered difficulties such as limited options in regards to some fonts and sizes of the writing, although again, that may have just been our lack of experience with the program. However, the film just started to take shape quite well, and this is the finished product. The biggest difficulty, was that there appeared to be no way to save the project to a usb or indeed ANYWHERE. There was no option to save it that we could find, so after making the mistake of finishing half and coming back the next day to a freshly wiped memory, we had to start from scratch again and finish the whole video in one day :) It was tough, but we managed. There was no original footage of our own, but we just used still images under the creative commons license. The references for each image can be found in the description below the actual film on YouTube. We were planning to have a male voice-over, but when it came down to it, the simple recorder on a phone was too crackely, so we stuck with 'moving titles'. As we had no way to save the file in editing mode, we tried to then go and add minimal changes after it was in its video format already, but it was almost impossible. We were able to make one change though...to cut out one section that was unwanted.

Week 6 - Tutorial Task

According to the lecture, Hollywood has had quite a bit of trouble adapting to the trends of internet sharing online. Back in the good old days, films were only shown in the black and white cinema's (The first cinema was aired in 1895) and were rarely seen again exept in re-runs. As the years bore on, and color cinema was introduced (1929), the attractions drew. The film business was growing, and with it its fan-base. Next to come was the TV that came into the regular family home (1939). Generally it symbolised family unity, as they had family focused shows that had the whole family sitting down together in the family room to watch it. TV was a bit of a difficulty with the cinema business, and only a selection of films were aired on TV. The cinemas tried to combat the problem of TVs detracting from their audience, that they aired a new technique of 3D films (1952). However, only a small portion of these films were a sucess. Television became a strong entertainment in the home.

Sony, a rising company at the time, introduced the first AFFORDABLE hand-held video camera for the average consumer (1967). It was very bulky, so they refined it and brought out a more manageable edition. These home made films were able to be played on VCR, which was the next thing to come. VCR (Video Cassette Recorder which was released in 1969), which played rentable versions of the films, where one could pay money and have a film of their choice playing on their screen on whim. VHS posed as a MAJOR problem to the cinemas, as people prefered to watch things on their own screens, rather than fork out money to go and watch a film on big screen. This cleared up, and then VHS moved on to our current DVD (1997), which has a now extended to Blu-ray (2005).

The internet is different in that rather than a viewer having to pay for a cinema ticket or to rent out a film, they can sit in the comfort of their computer chair and watch a film of their choice. The don't even have to go anywhere. On a whim, they could be watching a newly released film that hasn't even been released in their country yet. The problem for Hollywood, cinemas and dvd rental stores, is that they're not getting the income that they need in order to continue to make films, or sell them etc. Actors are acting, but if their audiences are not paying to watch it, then they will be given less and less payment for it, and will have less and less opportunities to act. Blockbuster films from Hollywood are made on a certain budget, and it is expected that the return sales from those films being shown in cinema, hired and bought, will in turn pay that original budget off. Although being able to download films and episodes online is fantastic for me, in essence, it is really running Hollywood down, as they won't be able to afford to make high budget films anymore...

Week 3 - Tutorial Task (Part 1)

Okay, so the thought of having a chip in one's body, is so unethical, and morally wrong. Yes, it may start out to be beneficial to disabled people, but it will be twisted before too long, to encompass all of humanity into using this chip as a form of currency. Even the bible mentions this happening, and that was written LONGGGGGGG before chips were ever thought of.

"And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a MARK in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the MARK, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Revelations 13v16-18"

See? It's definately going to happen, and is going to be a tool that will seriously have unwanted repurcussions. They're doing it to dogs now as a form of identification, and as yet, it has a weak range in that it cannot be detected unless in a certain radius. However, as technology advances, so will the chips, until it is exactly as the bible describes.

Week 2 - Tutorial Task (Part 2)

I'd say that the biggest communication technology sources that I use on a frequent basis, are; Facebook, my mobile phone, and Skype. Oooh, how long have I been using Facebook? I'd say probably somewhere around the three year mark?! ...How romantic. haha Ummmm, I only bought my mobile just before my last birthday in April, so I've had it for a little over 4 months. It's a Nokia E71 and for the first time in my life, I have unlimited use of Facebook, Youtube and texting (due to my particular cap that I'm on) on my mobile. It's fantastic. Previously I had phones that just had the basics, plus maybe the odd game of snake (Guilty pleasure). haha And since I was ALWAYS short on money, I rarely ever had credit, so there really wasn't much reason in having a phone. ahaha Skype is new to me really. I knew of it, and my parents had an account years ago so that they could talk to my relatives, but it wasn't until I became best friends with a girl that had come to Australia from Northern Ireland for an elongated holiday, did I realise I needed one. When she left to go home, I felt like facebook wasn't enough to really keep our friendship going, so I made an account, and spent one too many nights staying up late and talking to her. So Skype has really become important to me in the fact that I can both see and hear the other person, as though they were sitting right in front of me.

To be honest, I'm not really one of those people that is too concerned about my privacy. Yes, that should scare me, but I'm a very open individual, and in barely one conversation, one could absolutely know almost everything about me :) However, with those scare stories of how pedophiles and other such trolls out there have managed to pillage young girls, it has seemingly forced me to comply with the privacy settings on Facebook. That and my parents constant worrying. So now everything in my privacy settings on Facebook is set to 'Friends Only'. It doesn't really bother me that Google could use my pictures or some such. Truly, I'd be a little bit flattered. haha But it does concern me about people who can find out all my details by hacking into my account etc. That's dangerous. Not only for me, but for my family etc, so I have to be careful. And I'll admit to it...I am one of the many masses who just click 'I agree to the terms and services' button. I mean, who really has the time and patience to read them these days? haha

As I mentioned above, I have not that many qualms in talking to someone I've never met before. The most interesting are ones from other countries. Unless it's some 23 year old man who is just perverse. lol But yes, I do have quite a few people on facebook that I've never met in person. Only a handful of those do I ever actually speak to on a regular basis. Regular meaning every month or two. haha Obviously my normal friends chats are just non-stop. But I enjoy talking to complete randoms, and finding out about them. It's nice :) It is different talking to a random online than to someone you've known for years. Obviously you don't know much about this person, and you're just asking questions and answering them on just your general life details. You don't go in too deep though. You never know their background. And people that you already know, it just seems like you talk about what's happened that day or days previous if you haven't seen them in a while. Nothing really new and exciting, since you already know a lot about them.

Week 1 - Tutorial Task (Me, Myself And I)

Hello :) My name is Crystal Ginn, and I am studying a Bachelor of Communication at Griffith University on the coast. I am a Christian, and I enjoy singing at the top of my lungs; often in 'off-pitch' just for the fun of it so I can annoy my siblings when they try to actually sing well! haha But I can actually sing, and I enjoy it very much. I've only been a Christian for four years so far, but really only this year I've tried to knuckle down, learn more about Jesus, try to follow His example, and to familiarise myself with the Bible! :) My aim is to try and be as much like an ideal Christian as possible, so through me I can show Jesus' love to you! :)

In relation to this course I am studying; New Communication Technologies, I am hoping to further my computer skills, learn more about technology, and basically have a rather cruisy class. But I doubt that will happen unfortunately.

I am looking foward to this semester, as I am still in my first year of uni and in my second semester. Through my 'Bachelor of Communication', I hope to major in 'Marketing' and 'Communication and Media', and be a travelling advertising advisor to big companies. I hope to do a big advertising campaign with one company for a certain period of time, and move on to another. I like change! The two subjects I am most looking foward to this semester, are 'Intro to Music Programming and Production' where I basically make music from scratch, and 'Communication Performance' where at this stage, we are learning how to operate a news room studio. They sound fun!

Till a later date, I am signing off...
Crystal xx

Week 5 - Tutorial Task

Today I am answering the seemingly unecessary questions below with information not found in Google or Wikipedia. As this is getting me to use other search engines.

Where was the first University established and in which year?

According to the site that I clicked on, it’s not a 100% fact. Some say that it's Bologna, others say the Karuine at Morocco, and still others say the Al-Azhar of Egypt. Apparently there is no Archaeological evidence to back up these theories. However, Takshashila or Taxila has been proved to have been the international seat of learning where students from as far as Babylonia (Iraq), Greece, Syria, Arabia and China came to study. The university could accommodate  up to 10 500 students and was the Harvard or MIT standard university at that time.

--------The site's url that I used to gain this information is <http://bdheritage.info/blogs/entry/What-is-the-First-University-ever-established-on-this-earth>[Acessed 24 August 2011]. I found this site by typing into Bing (As it is a different search engine that I'd personally never use unless I had to, as is my current sitation) the phrase, 'the first ever university established?' and clicked on the second link, which was the first link that wasn't wikipedia or a question/answer site.--------

What is Stephen Stockwell's band called and what does he play?  Can you name a couple of their songs?

Stephen plays the keyboard for his band, Black Assassins. The names of the first ten songs off the bands site are, ASIO, Azaria, Barricades, Beggin' The Bullet, Death Comes To Townsville, Death Take Me Now, Drugs, Fear & Loathing In Toowomba, FMFMD and Going To The Wedding.

--------The site's url that I used to gain the name of Stephen Stockwell's band name and instrument is <http://live-wirez.gu.edu.au/Staff/Stephen/default.html> [Acessed 24 August 2011] and after that I went on the band's actual site and looked at their lyrics option, and that gave me a list of the songs names that they'd created<http://www.blackassassins.net/Lyrics.html> [Acessed 24 August 2011].  I found this site by typing into Bing the name, 'Stephen Stockwell' and clicked on the top link, which was a sort of bibliography for him.--------

What is the weight of the world’s biggest machine? How much did it cost to build?
I'm not sure if the above picture is the biggest machine in the world, but it definately is the world's largest ship ever constructed. It weighs a whopping 564 763 tons. Although I don't know how much it cost to build it, I'd say a lot.

--------The site's url that I used to gain this information is <http://www.bukisa.com/articles/40463_worlds-largest-machines-ever-built> [Acessed 24 August 2011]. I found this site by typing into Bing, 'the biggest machine ever made' and clicked on the link below the pictures.--------

Who is Justin Bieber's lawyer, and what is the best way (quickest, most reliable) to contact the lawyer?
I couldn't find this :S I tried Bing, then Bieber's actual official site, but with no luck.

Week 5 - Response to Content

I'm so upset, because I wrote so much and then the STUPID computer removed all of it without saving automatically as it usually does!!!!! ARGHHHH!

The film Rubber, produced in 2010, is an alternative story that follows the adventures and journey of a car tyre. The scene is introduced in the first act to different angle shots of chairs, and the film heavily used the rule of thirds. This is a very artistic way of filming. The car tyre is then introduced, and we see it 'learning to walk' so to speak. With it's wobbly and awkward rolling, we imagine it to be like a baby foal or deer, seeking to use its new legs and walk. This tyre finally learns how to roll by itself, and we sort of gain a small attachment to the object. That is until it tests its skills, and just by concentrating, can blow the heads off other objects, animals and humans. Using screenplay structure (Subtext: The Meaning Behind The Words 2011), the storyline adds to the scene before and after it, and progresses in a chronologically pleasing way, so that we follow the storyline better. The film is almost in real time, in that each scene is a long drawn-out one.

As the tyre doesn't speak throughout the film, the subtext (Sharda 2003) is determined by the music that was used to gain support and sympathy from the viewers.

Week 3 - Tutorial Task (Part 2)

When I first began high school, everything was new for me. I'd never had an 'msn' account, and didn't have any sort of social networking site running in my name. However as I started finding out what other pre-teens were doing, I then created an msn and was able to easily converse with them with meaningless and stinted conversations. And example of such a conversation would consist of needless annotations and glittery animations of words such as; lol, kool, brb etc.

 Is MySpace old now?

* .....or another one you can think of?

.... What will the future "cool thing" be  once facebook is old skool... ?
medium that has faded from popularity – like the BBS or Usenet or the original AOL or Compuserve --- please use at least 2 references Explain what the technology/medium was, what kinds of things people did with it, what was the number of users at its peak, why did it fade away?    Did it influence the way we use technology today?

Week 3 - Response to Content

Week 2 - Tutorial Task (Part 1)

I chose the above video from YouTube merely by just typing the most obvious phrase into the search bar: 'New Communication Technologies'. I mean how much more related to the topic can you be? :) So I clicked the first video that came up, and upon watching it, I didn't really like it. haha So in the recommended videos to the right,  I clicked on the then most eye-appealing video to there, and clicked away. The creator of this video is extremely creative, and had put much effort into making a stop-motion film which consists of cut-out paper versions of communication instruments over the ages. I shall give a breif list of the communication instruments shown in the video:
  • Firstly, is the physical yelling as was restricted to that of the stone-age man (...according to the video. I would have also included smoke signalling).
  • Then comes the letter. This was the main form of communication for centuries.
  • Next is the morse code system. This was used in telegraphs and s.o.s' between sinking ships and the mainlands/other vessels.
  • The type writer is then introduced. This was the first form of the computer, and a less-manual form of writing letters. Women generally were the most dominant users of this machine.
  • Then comes the rotary dial telephone with their finger wheels. (However, the person who created this video neglected to mention the original telephone created by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.)
  • Straight afterwards in the video comes the finger pad telephones.
  • The mobile phone is introduced...in big-brick style.
  • Then making a jump between the big-brick mobile phone with an antenna, the video creator jumped straight to an iPhone Touch. I believe there have been quite a FEW models in between. The Nokia brick phone been one of these, with additive COLOUR COVERS as technology advanced. Also the flip-phones and slide phones. Then (as I now have) came the mini-keyboard phones (eg. Nokia E71 that I have and the Blackberry etc.).
  • The creator of the video then put up the icons of the current most popular social-networking internet sites out there; facebook, twitter, myspace and bebo.
  • The next image is a laptop, which then evolves into an iPad, which the creator has cleverly typed (in cardboard letter stop-motion style of course) on the iPad, 'what's next?'
I think this video well summerises how communication technology has changed over the years.

The following link that I've provided, is a how-to page that is incredibly detailed on how to select certain facebook friends to either see or not see your status', photos, etc. The page goes into detail, showing step-by-step pictures so you can easily follow along. <http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/modify-private-facebook-account-fans/ [Accessed 7 August 2011>

Week 2 - Response to Content
